Introduction to MES System Equipment Data Collection Technology

The equipment data acquisition technology of MES (Manufacturing Execution System) is the core link to achieve digitalization and transparency of the production process. Its goal is to obtain real-time and accurate information on equipment operation status, process parameters, production data, etc., providing data support for production scheduling, quality control, equipment maintenance, etc. The following are the basic equipment data collection technologies, applicable scenarios, and development trends commonly used in MES systems.


Three mainstream data acquisition systems/devices

DCS is a "distributed control system", while PLC (programmable logic controller) is just a control "device", which is the difference between "system" and "device". The system can achieve the functions and coordination of any device, while the PLC device only implements the functions possessed by this unit.


In terms of main application scenarios:


DCS focuses more on the field of process control (such as chemical, smelting, pharmaceutical, etc.), mainly monitoring and regulating some on-site parameters, while PLC focuses on logical control of individual devices/equipment.


SCADA focuses more on the field of equipment acquisition and monitoring (such as electronics, home appliances, etc.). By definition, SCADA is a monitoring, control, and data acquisition system that looks similar to DCS. Its lower computer can be composed of DCS lower computer or PLC/RTU devices. The upper computer often uses SCADA software from various manufacturers.


Applicable scenarios

In terms of main application scenarios:


SCADA is mainly used for decentralized control points, and a system may cover a radius of thousands of kilometers, such as long-distance pipelines for electronics, appliances, natural gas, power dispatch systems, and so on.


Compared to SCADA, DCS systems are relatively concentrated geographically, usually covering the entire factory area, and are suitable for industries including power generation, refining, food, chemical, and machining.


PLCs are more centralized and are usually applied in equipment and automated production lines, covering a wide range of industries.
